Amazon's Super Cheap File Hosting

After two days of searching I've chosen Amazon Simple Storage Service (S3), as our new file host. (Two days is actually a quick research period for me!) There's a lot to like about Amazon S3 and to be honest it's the CHEAPEST FILE HOST ON THE PLANET. Trust me on that one. Amazon S3 is pay as you go, as opposed to subscription based like everybody else. Amazon S3 is only a files host, so you can't run PHP or Perl or anything. And there has been a few downtimes in the past. But I personally don't care; the way I plan to leverage S3 makes downtimes negligible. In some ways Amazon S3 is cheaper than free because I don't have to worry about some free file host suddenly dropping my content. Remember: Amazon survived the dot-com bubble.

So yeah, that's what I've been up to. This all started when Google wouldn't host the Electroplankton WAV pack I wanted to share. They have a max upload size of 10 MB and the file is 12MB. We no longer have to worry about annoyances like that! Amazon S3 came just at the right time. I’m so excited!

I highly recommend this service to anyone looking for legit and reliable file hosting. Yes you have to pay for it but it’s worth the money. And like I said before it’s super cheap. You’re only paying for what you use. If nobody downloads your files that month then you don’t have to pay anything. And the more people download the smaller it scales. The story behind S3 is pretty amazing. Basically the servers were just sitting there doing nothing so they were like, “Why don’t we offer file hosting on this?”
